The Seventh Seal is a classic 1957 Swedish drama directed by Ingmar Bergman. Set during the Black Death, the film follows a knight, Antonius Block, who returns from the Crusades to find his homeland devastated by the plague. On a beach, Block encounters Death, personified as a pale figure, who has come to claim Block's life. To stall for time, Block challenges Death to a chess game for his life. As the game progresses, Block and his squire travel, meeting characters who each deal with the devastation of the plague in different ways. In the end, Block finds peace and acceptance in the face of his mortality. The movie is a powerful meditation on the inevitability of death and the search for solace and faith in an increasingly godless world.
