The Blues Brothers is a 1980 American musical action comedy film starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as "Joliet" Jake and Elwood Blues, characters developed from a musical sketch on the NBC variety series Saturday Night Live. Directed by John Landis, it tells the story of Jake and Elwood Blues, two brothers who set out on a mission from God to save the Catholic orphanage where they were raised by reuniting their former R&B band and raising money to pay the orphanage's property tax bill. The film also features musical numbers from prominent R&B and soul artists of the time, such as Ray Charles, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, and John Lee Hooker. Along their journey, they are pursued by the police, a mystery woman, and the "Illinois Nazi". The film received generally positive reviews, and was one of the most financially successful films of the year, grossing over $115 million worldwide.
