Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is a 1971 musical fantasy film directed by Mel Stuart and based on Roald Dahl's 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In the film, eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) holds a competition to select five children to tour his factory and win a lifetime supply of chocolate. The five lucky winners are Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum), Mike Teavee (Paris Themmen), Violet Beauregarde (Denise Nickerson), Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole), and Augustus Gloop (Michael Bollner). During their tour of the factory, the children are tested by various challenges, such as a boat ride in the Chocolate River, a discussion with the Oompa-Loompas (the factory's diminutive workers), and a visit to the great Inventing Room. Each of the winners succumbs to temptation in one way or another, except for Charlie, who is ultimately rewarded with the factory and gets to continue making chocolate.
