The Shining is a psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. The film follows the story of Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic, who takes a job as the winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He moves in with his wife, Wendy, and son, Danny, who is gifted with “the shining” — psychic abilities that enable him to see the hotel’s horrific past. As the Torrances settle in at the hotel, Jack’s sanity begins to unravel, and he becomes possessed by the demonic forces which inhabit the Overlook. The terrifying events that follow test the strength of the Torrance family and threaten to destroy them.

The film stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, and T. K. Carter. The film follows a team of scientists and U.S. Army personnel at a research outpost in Antarctica who are terrorized by an alien life form that assimilates and imitates other organisms. After a dog is brought to the outpost by helicopter, the alien takes the form of the dog and begins to hunt and kill the team, eventually assimilating other members of the group. In the end, R.J. MacReady, the only survivor of the group, is left to battle the alien creature. The Thing received mixed reviews upon release, but has since become a cult classic and is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time.
