Akira is a 1988 Japanese animated post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Katsuhiro Ôtomo. The story follows a teenage biker gang leader, Shotaro Kaneda, and his childhood friend Tetsuo Shima, as they battle an underground revolutionary group that is attempting to free an imprisoned psychic child named Akira. They soon discover that the powers of Akira are far greater and more dangerous than they could have imagined. The film is a thrilling exploration of government power and its effects on society, as well as a commentary on the destructive potential of technology.
