Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel of the same name. The story revolves around a giant great white shark that preys upon the people of Amity Island, a fictional New England summer resort town. Police chief Martin Brody attempts to protect the beaches of the island while seeking help from a marine biologist, Matt Hooper, and a professional shark hunter, Quint. Together, they set out to hunt the shark and find a way to get rid of it. The film is a classic and is widely credited as being the first summer blockbuster, setting the standard for later films of the same genre. It won three Academy Awards and grossed more than $470 million worldwide in box office revenue.
